BHZA participated in the Concept design and design assistance for the GEBIS-PEI, which is a contemporary monastic campus designed around a disciplined “East meets West” philosophy—merging the spiritual clarity of Classical Asian architecture with the resilient construction intelligence of Prince Edward Island. The project is rooted in local craft, climate realities, and long-term stewardship, while maintaining a monastic atmosphere defined by restraint, stillness, and ritual order.

The architecture is organized as a quiet campus set back from roads and waterways to protect ecological integrity and sustain a contemplative environment. The sanctuary anchors the masterplan, harmonizing with the landscape and reinforcing the spatial discipline essential to meditation and practice.

Formal expression is led by a high-pitched roofscape with subtly curved tips, paired with a modern interpretation of Dougong-style bracket logic—recast through contemporary timber construction and precision craftsmanship. Interiors remain austere and serene, guided by natural light, clean junctions, and minimal visual noise, aligning the project’s architectural character with monastic humility and focus. 

Local integration shaped every major decision. Working with regional partners and trades, the campus prioritizes PEI materials, weather-tested assemblies, and durable detailing that withstands coastal winters. Select Japanese tile craftsmanship is used as a restrained accent—deployed with intention rather than decoration—reinforcing the project’s central thesis: cultural authenticity is achieved through construction logic, material honesty, and quiet performance, not stylistic excess.
