ZEAL is BHZA’s research and experimental laboratory. It transforms curiosity into tested architectural frameworks and converts ideas through validated Mediums ready for project implementation.

ZEAL exists from fantasy to an innovative solution, storytelling, experience, and phonamina before it reaches the construction site.

Instead of asking “How can we innovate?”, ZEAL asks “What makes people’s projects people?” — envelope breakdown, cost escalation, coordination gaps, regulatory friction, performance under-delivery. Research is structured to remove these failure points, to get into the design for people, and to use architecture as the exploration medium for people's perception and experimentation.

Experiential Architecture and Spatial Research Laboratory

ZEAL is BHZA’s experimental research platform dedicated to human experience, space-time theory, and the cultural dimensions of architecture.

If ZAI investigates how architecture operates,
ZEAL investigates how architecture is felt, perceived, and understood.

ZEAL studies architecture as lived experience — shaped by movement, memory, emotion, ritual, and narrative.

Its research focuses on:

Spatial sequencing and temporal perception
Environmental psychology and social interaction
Cultural symbolism and collective identity
Atmosphere, tactility, and embodied experience
Experimental media, including short film, visual narrative, and graphic storytelling.

Core Research Themes

Biocentric Design and Human Wellbeing
We study how architecture can actively support health, attention restoration, and social connection—through daylight strategies, material tactility, acoustic comfort, and biophilic spatial sequences. The goal is not “green aesthetics,” but measurable comfort and livability.
Cultural Integration and Contemporary Craft
We explore how cultural identity can be expressed without pastiche. This includes research into proportion, assembly logic, and material authenticity—translating traditional craft principles into contemporary building systems suited to Canadian contexts.
Climate-Responsive Building Envelopes
We develop envelope strategies tuned to maritime and west-coast climates, prioritizing durability, moisture control, thermal continuity, and long-term maintainability. The research is explicitly tied to buildable details and contractor-ready documentation.
Industrialized and Prefabricated Delivery
We study modular and panelized approaches that improve schedule certainty and quality control. Research outputs focus on repeatable modules, tolerance strategies, logistics constraints, and coordinated consultant integration.
Circularity and Low-Carbon Materials
We evaluate material choices and assemblies that reduce embodied carbon while maintaining performance. This includes mass timber applications, hybrid structural systems, and retrofit-first planning approaches.
