Project: The Spruce Grove Summer House
Location: Halifax Coastal
Set amidst granite boulders and dense spruce stands, this private residence was designed by BHZA to offer an immersive connection to nature without sacrificing modern living. The design response is a study in duality: a rugged, protective exterior meant to weather coastal elements, contrasted with an open, serene interior.
The building’s form is distinct yet familiar, utilizing a sharp gabled silhouette reminiscent of traditional maritime outbuildings. The dark charcoal cladding allows the structure to visually recede into the tree line during warmer months and stand in striking contrast against winter snow. The central design feature is the cantilevered living space, characterized by a massive window wall that frames the dramatic sunsets and floods the home with warmth. Natural cedar accents soften the facade, hinting at the inviting atmosphere within. This is architecture built to endure, providing a quiet, grounding escape for its inhabitants.
